Dante wrote that over loving was the key reason we slip into sinful actions. Dante believed there was also a key reason that Lust was the first circle of hell; Lust draws us in to the circles beyond.
I have assumed a more modern understanding of Lust. For Dante lust was entirely inter-sexual, whereas I see Lust as our desire for anything. We live in a world where wanting more is the norm. New or just different ‘stuff’ is advertised at every term. We are surrounded by neighbours who hanker for a new car, that designer handbag or or the latest hair style. This leads us into being unhappy with what we have, where we are and therefore drives a malignant wedge between people. We talk about being in limbo as being a bad thing. Surely it is better than being drawn into the perils beyond, such as the circle below; Gluttony.
